The environmental
impact of plastics currently made from
petrochemical feedstock is a matter of growing public
concern. Far-reaching changes in the plastics processing
industry have now become inevitable.
SPHERE Group is totally convinced that new alternatives
are needed, and our R&D laboratories have made
this a focus of their work for a number of years.
In addition, SPHERE also now has the benefit of
a wide range of patents owned by its German subsidiary
BIOTEC. This means that we are ready to take up
the critical challenge for the decades ahead –
industrial-scale production of biodegradable products
made from starch-based raw materials.
To achieve this objective, we work in close cooperation
with public research institutes and farming industry
representatives. To take just one example, we are
already able to offer a new generation of flexible
and rigid plastics made from sustainable plant-derived
sources – grain and potato starches –
combined with copolyesters to ensure suitable material
bonding. Our industrial evolution will take several
years and will ensure that we keep our leading positions
in Europe and also win new recognition on world
markets. |
